Senior Design Printer Request

The Idea2Product (I2P) Lab offers a limited number of FDM printers that may be checked out by approved Senior Design teams for the duration of their project.

This program is intended to support teams whose projects require frequent prototyping, large print volumes, or extended print time that may be difficult to accommodate using shared lab printers.

Approved teams will receive a printer for use during the semester and are responsible for operating and maintaining the equipment in accordance with I2P lab policies.

Printers available through this program may include Prusa MK4 or MK3 printers, depending on availability.

Eligibilty

Printer checkout is currently available for MECH 486 Senior Design teams.

To be considered for a printer checkout, teams must:

  • Designate a primary contact responsible for the printer

  • Ensure the primary contact holds an active I2P Lab Pass

  • Ensure the primary contact has no more than one strike on their account

  • Submit the Printer Checkout Request Form below

Meeting these requirements does not guarantee printer approval. Printers are limited and requests are reviewed based on project needs, responsible lab usage history, and overall availability.

Program Expectations

Teams approved for printer checkout are expected to:

  • Use printers responsibly and safely

  • Follow all I2P lab policies

  • Avoid wasteful or excessive printing

  • Report equipment malfunctions or repeated print failures immediately

  • Return the printer clean, undamaged, and with all included components

The primary contact listed on the application will be responsible for the printer and for ensuring the team follows all I2P policies.

Failure to comply with program expectations may result in:

  • Revocation of printer privileges

  • Loss of I2P lab access

  • Replacement fees for damaged equipment

  • Notification of the Senior Design course coordinator

Materials

Checkout printers are primarily intended for use with PLA and PETG.

Some materials (such as ABS, ASA, nylon, or fiber-reinforced filaments) may require specialized hardware such as hardened steel nozzles or heated chambers. These materials may not be approved for checkout printers and may need to be printed using equipment within the I2P Lab.

Requests for hardware changes or special materials must be approved by I2P staff.

Printer Availability

Printers are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

MK4 printers will be issued first when available, followed by MK3 printers.

Printers are loaned for one semester only and must be returned before finals week of the semester.

Apply for Priner Checkout

Senior Design teams interested in requesting a printer should complete the form below.

After submission, the I2P lab team will review the request and contact the primary contact listed on the form with next steps if a printer is available.

Please allow us 1 week to process your application

I2P FDM Printer Check Out Agreement

By checking the “I agree” box below, I acknowledge that I have read, understood, and agree to abide by the following policies regarding the checkout and use of an I2P FDM printer. I understand that failure to comply with these policies may result in loss of printer privileges, loss of I2P lab access, replacement fees for damaged equipment, and/or contact made with the Senior Design course instructor.

  • Printers are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. MK4 printers will be issued first, followed by MK3 printers if MK4 units are unavailable.

  • Printers are loaned for one semester only and must be returned before finals week of the semester.

  • The printer must be returned clean, undamaged, and with all included components and accessories.

  • Teams may not modify, repair, or disassemble printers without authorization from I2P staff.

  • Requests for hardware changes (such as nozzle changes or upgrades) must be submitted to: engr-me_i2plab@mail.colostate.edu.

  • Some materials (such as ABS, ASA, carbon fiber-reinforced, or glass fiber-reinforced filaments) may require special hardware such as hardened steel nozzles or heated chambers and may not be approved for checkout printers. These prints may need to be completed in the I2P lab instead.

  • Teams are expected to use printers responsibly and avoid wasteful or excessive printing.

  • Any printer malfunctions, repeated print failures, or equipment damage must be reported to I2P staff immediately.

  • Damage caused by misuse may result in revoked printer access for the entire team or replacement fees for damaged equipment.

  • The primary contact listed on this form is responsible for the printer and for ensuring the team complies with all I2P policies.

Please read each statement carefully and check each box in the application to indicate that you understand and agree.
